An article published in the Oct. 2009 edition of Nature Reviews: Endocrinology highlights that supplementation with the currently recommended vitamin D levels of 400 IU falls well short of being effective.
The article was written by Dr. Bruce Hollis, a respected researcher that has published numerous articles on vitamin D and its role in cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteoporosis and more. Do any sort of search on vitamin D and chances are good that his name will come up.
Hollis discusses how the current recommendations of 400 IU don’t do anything to increase serum (blood) levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D sufficiency (adequate levels) is defined as having vitamin D levels above 75 nmol/l. In one study, they found that 74% of postmenopausal women had levels lower than 50 nmol/l. Vitamin D levels this low are implicated in a number of diseases in epidemiological studies.
The graph below, taken from the article, shows how vitamin D supplementation below 1,000 IUs/day did not significantly increase serum levels of vitamin D.
To put this in plain English:

The US Surgeon General reports that half of all women older than 50 will break a bone because of osteoporosis. Up to one in four men will too. And breaking a bone when you’re older is serious. It can lead to immobility, which in turn can lead to isolation, depression and other health problems. More than 20 percent of seniors who break a hip will die within one year. Many of those who survive will need long-term nursing home care.
Thirty years ago, most people considered osteoporosis and broken bones to be a part of normal aging. That view has changed. Researchers today know a lot about how you can protect your bones throughout your life with nutrition and exercise. And although it’s never too late to start protecting your bones,the best time to begin is while you’re young.
Individuals who consume adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D throughout life should enjoy better overall bone health for two reasons. First, they are more likely to achieve optimal skeletal mass early in life, and second, they are less likely to lose bone later in life. The net result should be higher bone mass and fewer fractures.

American Academy of Dermatology Issues Updated Position Statement on Vitamin D
The American Academy of Dermatology recently issued an updated position statement on vitamin D after an updated review of the increasing body of scientific literature on this vitamin and its importance for optimal health.
The Academy continues to recommend that the public obtain vitamin D from nutritional sources and dietary supplements, and not from unprotected exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or indoor tanning devices, as UV radiation is a known risk factor for the development of skin cancer.
The Academy’s position statement on vitamin D now also states that individuals who regularly and properly practice sun protection, such as the daily use of sunscreen on exposed skin or the wearing of sun protective clothing, may be at risk for vitamin D insufficiency. A higher dose of vitamin D may be necessary for these individuals and others with known risk factors for vitamin D insufficiency, such as those with dark skin, the elderly, photosensitive individuals, people with limited sun exposure, obese individuals or those with fat malabsorption. Therefore, the Academy encourages those with concerns about their levels of vitamin D to discuss options for obtaining sufficient dietary or supplementary sources of vitamin D with their physician. |

Osteoporosis is absolutely devastating to the elderly. We all have our own ideas about whether or not we are having enough nutrition to keep our bones in good shape. If we are fortunate enough to live to senior years we want to be fit enough to enjoy the free time. We don’t want to be worrying abouth falling. You often see the elderly stepping gingerly face down afraid of slipping as they know that breaking a bone will end their freedom. The fact is, that this fear, and looking downward most often causes a person to fall. You will go in the direction you are looking. You should be walking straight and looking ahead for correct balance.
The result of being bedridden causes a person to become weaker and more susceptible to infections. Your immune system is also weakened inviting dangerous diseases and infections. Less exercise causes your arteries to become less elastic and more prone to infections.
I have to tell you, I know all this, but like many of us, did not worry too much about it, invincible, you know, not worried about the future, until my kids jokingly made a comment. “Mom, did you know that if you are less than 4′ 9″ that you are legally required to be in a child restraint seat ? “, and oh how they laughed at me. Little scabs! They are all taller than their mother. I am just cracking 5′!
That really got me thinking, you know- they EXPECT that I am going to get shorter! They take it as a “Fact of Life.” Well, I take no more chances. I have started a regular regiment of Bone Mate along with my other supplementation to keep up the bone density! Dr. Oz also recommends 1,200 mg of Vitamin C a day, but cautions that going over 2,500 mg may do the opposite ad increase osteoarthritis and DNA abnormalities. There are 120 mg of Vitamin C in the daily recommended dose of Bone Mate.
Bone is one thing in our body that does regenerate. However it may take months to do so. After the age of 35 your bones stop growing, and the bone density decreases, holes in the bone get larger. Osteoporosis is a result of significant decreases in bone density.
